Crash Course: Writing Children’s Picture Books

Instructor: Laurel Snyder

Picture books are different from any other kind of writing, because they can be almost anything. Check the shelves of the nearest bookstore, and you'll find quiet lilting bedtime poems, informative biographies, hilarious character-driven stories, and subversive meta-fiction.

In this class we'll learn about some of the basic picture book forms. We'll talk craft and canon, poetry and fiction. We'll play and read and write.

After a lunch break, the session will get into the nitty-gritty of publishing.  We'll go over best practices for writing queries and formatting manuscripts. We'll explore agents and editors, and learn some important dos and don'ts.

As an added bonus, each student is invited to submit one picture book manuscript (up to 10 pages) for a personal critique from the teacher.

Lunch is provided.

Class is limited to 12.
